The Flight Nurse demonstrates advanced critical thinking capabilities in working autonomously and in collaboration with other health care providers in the delivery of care to critically ill patients in diverse and non-traditional settings. Scope includes providing care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, and adult age groups. Work conditions include performing essential job responsibilities in moving aircraft or ground ambulance, exposure to noise, vibration, unpressurized helicopter flight up to 10,000 feet, and potential exposure to infectious diseases. Life Flight RNs must have or obtain advanced certification (CCRN, CFRN, CNPT, CEN, or CTRN) within 2 years of hire. Responsibilities include assessing physical, social, and psychological status; planning individualized care; implementing medical care and medication administration; evaluating patient response; and promoting professionalism and compliance with legal and ethical standards. Minimum qualifications include current RN license, BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications, three years of critical care/emergency department or labor and delivery experience, and ability to be at the Life Flight base within 30 minutes of dispatch. Preferred qualifications include at least 3 years NICU experience and BSN degree. Physical requirements involve visual and manual dexterity, communication skills, lifting and moving patients and equipment, and standing for extended periods.
